Salience labs, a UK-based company based in Oxford, has successfully closed its Series A funding round of $30 million. The round was led by ICM HPQC Fund and Applied Ventures, LLC, which is the venture capital arm of Applied Materials, Inc. Strategic Investment Fund, Braavos, and existing investors — this includes Oxford Sciences Enterprises, Cambridge Innovation Capital, Silicon Catalyst, and industry leader, Jalal Bagherli — have also invested in the company.

The infusion of $30 million is likely to help drive the development of Salience Labs’ latest cutting-edge optical switches that are engineered to enhance connectivity within large-scale AI data centers.

The switches are designed to bring major bandwidth economies while saving power and reducing latency, thereby significantly eliminating bottlenecks associated with contemporary AI infrastructure. That was exactly what Salience Labs intends to do with the funding to market its innovative products, which will help gain more efficient and scalable connectivity between AI clusters.

Founded in 2021, Salience Labs has emerged as a fast-growing leader in photonic solutions targeting AI data center connectivity. The company’s technology is a culmination of more than a decade of research on silicon photonics that resulted in the development of optical switches to preserve optical signals during the whole process of transmitting data. Such an approach means the absence of costly transceivers and hence guarantees compatibility, reliability, and manufacturability.

Co-founded & CEO Vaysh Kewada and CTO Dr. Johannes Feldmann, Salience Labs has been particularly active in the commercialization of technology and strategic leadership by its CEO, while its Photonic division has been led and enhanced by a physicist named Dr. William Jeffrey, who recently joined the Board of Directors. Dr. Jeffrey’s distinguished career includes roles such as Director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology and CEO of SRI International, bringing invaluable expertise to support Salience Labs’ growth trajectory.

Innovations in Photonic Technology

Salience Labs’ core innovation is in the development of photonic switches specifically designed for AI applications. These switches use light to transmit data, which provides significant advantages over electronic counterparts, including higher bandwidth, reduced latency, and lower power consumption. The technology minimizes the need for electrical conversions by maintaining optical signals throughout the data path, thus making AI data center architectures more efficient and scalable.

Strategic vision and market impact

With the new funding, Salience Labs is perfectly positioned to tackle the growing demands of AI workloads, which require increasingly sophisticated and efficient data center connectivity solutions. The photonic switches by the company are expected to be a crucial component in the enabling of next-generation AI infrastructure for faster data processing and more efficient resource utilization. Salience Labs will look to become a cornerstone in the evolving landscape of AI data centers through high-performance, scalable, and energy-efficient connectivity solutions.
