CargoBeamer, based in Leipzig, Germany, has sealed up to €65 million in equity and debt financing from Orion Infrastructure Capital (OIC). The funding deal will see CargoBeamer use this massive amount to finance its ambitious plans for expanding freight transport in Europe.

The recent funding round amounts to €65 million, a mix of equity and debt financing. It has been strategically set aside to enhance the expansion strategies of CargoBeamer. This funding is added to €50 million raised from an existing shareholder and €90 million in grants received from the German Federal Railway Authority and the Swiss Federal Office of Transport in 2024.

CargoBeamer has gained €205 million as growth capital within the last year. It put the company’s business into an accelerated development as well as innovation at the forefront of the logistics sector.

Founded in 2003, CargoBeamer is one of the forerunners in the logistics sector. The company has been operating by offering intermodal rail transport for semi-trailers.
CargoBeamer’s proprietary system is efficient and environmentally friendly and does not require modification of the trailer and can move various types of semi-trailers onto the railway without requiring a truck and driver for the long haul. This innovative approach reduces carbon emissions while relieving road congestion. This, therefore, leads to a more sustainable and efficient freight transport network in Europe.

CargoBeamer CEO Nicolas Albrecht. Albrecht joined as Chief Business Development Officer in January 2020 and was appointed as CEO in 2022. He helped build the company further and develop its strategic direction.
Co-founder Dr. Hans-Jürgen Weidemann, former CEO, and currently Chief Technology Officer (CTO), continues to oversee and maintain the patented technologies developed by CargoBeamer.

Their combined expertise and visionary leadership helped position CargoBeamer as one of the premier sustainable freight transportation solutions. cargobeamer.com Innovative Transport Solutions CargoBeamer’s innovative transportation system is capable of integrating both road and rail logistics.
Specific railway cars, as well as terminals, offer the possibility for horizontal loading as well as offloading of semitrailers, thus entirely eliminating the utilization of cranes and allowing swift processing times.

This technique supports all forms of semi-trailers, which are often not suitable for traditional rail transportation, thus widening the scope of commodities that can be moved effectively through rail.

The outcome is a substantial reduction in greenhouse gases and a supply chain that becomes streamlined for companies throughout Europe.

The new funds will be used to construct two modern terminals in Kaldenkirchen, Germany, and Domodossola, Italy. The construction process is expected to begin in 2025, with the work set to be completed by 2026. Upon completion, these terminals will increase CargoBeamer’s network to three, complementing the existing facility in Calais, France.
This expansion forms a critical aspect of CargoBeamer’s plan to create an all-encompassing network of routes and terminals that enable effective and sustainable transport of semi-trailers over the European continent.

Impacts on Freight Transport in Europe CargoBeamer’s innovative method solves several inherent problems in conventional freight transport. By diverting a significant amount of freight from road to rail, the company reduces traffic congestion, reduces the risk of road accidents, and reduces environmental pollution.

Furthermore, the system provides logistics companies with an inexpensive and reliable substitute for long-distance trucking and reduces their carbon footprint. In line with European regulations that are increasingly favoring sustainable transport solutions, CargoBeamer’s model fits in with the continent’s environmental goals.

Technological Advancements The core philosophy for CargoBeamer’s success rests in innovation by technology. It has its patented system with a horizontal method for loading and unloading the semi-trailer in a process which is faster, versatile, and efficient.

Thus, without modifying the semi-trailers in any manner, this method helps transport regular, standard-sized semi-trailers, offering scope to several logistics providers. At the same time, through a rapid-loading-unloading cycle of the terminals, the whole cycle of efficiency becomes enhanced because it reduces terminal dwell times greatly.

The environmental advantages of CargoBeamer’s system are substantial.
Rail transport is inherently more energy-efficient than road transport, and by enabling the seamless transfer of freight from road to rail, CargoBeamer contributes to a significant reduction in CO2 emissions.

This shift not only supports global efforts to combat climate change but also helps companies meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations and sustainability targets.

Additionally, it reduces wear and tear on road infrastructure, along with decreasing the noise pollution of urban areas by reducing dependence on road transport.
